In Job Interviews & Careers First Impressions Count

There is an old parlor game played by college professors to introductory classes. Basically it’s a take off on “First Impressions Count “.  Students are divvied up into pairs.

Person one is instructed to talk to person two about any topic or theme they wish for a short time period.  When that segment is complete the listener is asked to summarize what he knows about, knows of or thinks of this previously perfect stranger.

What results in most cases, and is overall a most staggering demonstration is that in this little impromptu presentation is that the summary description of the presenter is for the most cases entirely accurate.  Thus goes a demonstration of the power of first impressions in interpersonal contact and communication.  The second lesson here is that all of us are for the most part; making major judgments and determinations on people we meet in the fist minute or two.  On top of that once formed , even if proven to be inaccurate its difficult if not impossible to get rid of these first formed perceptions in our interpersonal relationships , communications and even conflicts with the other party or parties.

Yet many people do not take the power of first impressions to note or care, when they are involved in job interviews and potential employment and career introductions.

Simple Contact Ahead of the Meeting to Set the Stage:

What can you do before landing that new job or position to set the stage and prepare for lasting “good impressions”?   First if possible plan and seek ahead by actually arranging a meeting or introduction to the decision makers.  Often this can be done within the ranges and confines of normal protocols even if just to thank them by phone for arranging a job interview or perhaps a quick meeting to ask how best to prepare for the interview or directions to the meeting room itself.  It may seem trite yet many in management appreciate those who plan ahead for effectiveness and work not to waste their or other people’s time.

Keep Simple Yet Detailed Notes:

Secondly if there is a string of interviews one leading to another, then keeps simple yet detailed notes on both the meetings and personalities involved.  This shows and demonstrates the traits of attention to detail and as well a keen memory that never forgets.
On top of that you would be amazed at how many job interviews and positions were lost when candidates forgot or mispronounced names, people or details.  On top of that once you do get the job you will be able to greet supervisory staff and co-workers by name, which can only help you in your progress and pursuits.

Be Rested & Refreshed for the Interview Meeting or Meetings:

Lastly before you attend any job interview plan to have a proper nights sleep so that you appear rested, have a clear mind and a fresh attitude.  In life it can be said that it’s often the case that the most important things are fairly basic and simple – yet few attend to these in simple detail and follow through.
